Colleen's Caring Advice

It’s the holiday season once again! I don’t know about you, but it feels like time is flying by way too fast in my life. I’m sure that I am not alone in that thinking. But this is my favorite time of year. It’s a time when people come together and reconnect. We remember what is truly important . . . our loved ones. Whether it be family or friends, we know our lives would not be as unique and special without them.

Have you ever been in a moment that makes you smile and remember a special person in your life? Like smelling a freshly bloomed flower or watching a butterfly dance in the wind. I have these moments every day and I am so grateful for that. The smells, sights, and sounds of the holidays invoke these special memories for all of us.

I have been a Registered Nurse for 30 years (although I am only 29 . . . hmmm, fuzzy math), and most of those years have been dedicated the to the Home Care Industry. During my years as an ICU Nurse, I loved the one on one care that I had with my patients. In home care, I was able to really connect with my patients and their families. That became my niche. Over the years I’ve learned a thing or two, and I would love to share what I can with anyone who is caring for a loved one.

TIP #1: The health care industry is so ridiculously complicated!!!!!!!!

  • Filling out forms and knowing how to navigate insurance.

  • Knowing your rights and benefits

  • Having an advocate to help you get what you deserve

I would like to share the tips from my dear friend, Frank Fazio, author of a lovely and simple to read book called “A Caregivers Life; Tips for Family Caregivers.” Frank cared for his father for many years. He did this not because he felt he had to, but because he loved his dad. (To learn more about Frank’s story and advice, you can find his book on Amazon!!) Here’s a tip from his book that stuck with me the most.

Frank’s #1 Tip: Being a Caregiver is an honor. Caring for a loved one is an honor that can bring intrinsic value and happiness to your life. (Wow! If we all had that attitude what a better world this would be!)
